What Makes the Dynamic Completely Different

Every standard Concept 2 rowing machine — the Model D, Model E, current RowErg — uses a fixed frame where the flywheel unit stays completely still and only the seat moves during the stroke. It’s an excellent system and it works brilliantly for fitness rowing, CrossFit, and general training.

The Dynamic is fundamentally different. On the Dynamic, both the seat and the flywheel unit move. The footrest plate is fixed to the ground. When you take a stroke, your seat slides back while the flywheel unit slides forward — toward each other. When you recover, they both return to their starting positions.

This is exactly what happens in a real rowing shell on water. In a boat, you push against the footstretcher and the boat moves under you — you don’t simply slide your body along a fixed rail. The Dynamic replicates this precisely, which is why it’s used in:

This machine is fitted with the PM3 monitor — the generation prior to the current PM5. The PM3 is a fully capable performance monitor that tracks all core metrics: split time per 500m, pace, watts, calories, stroke rate, and total distance. It runs all standard Concept 2 workout programs and interval modes.

The key difference from the PM5 is connectivity. The PM3 connects via USB cable only — it does not have Bluetooth or ANT+ wireless connectivity, meaning it will not pair with phones, fitness apps, or wearables wirelessly. For athletes who simply want to train and log their sessions via USB to the Concept 2 online logbook, this is no obstacle at all. For athletes who rely on Bluetooth to connect to apps like ErgData, Garmin Connect, or Polar Flow during every session, it is worth noting.

The PM3 is fully functional, accurate, and reliable. It is simply an older generation of the same proven system. Many competitive rowers have trained their entire careers on PM3 monitors without issue.

Important: Storage & Space

Unlike the Model D and E, the Concept 2 Dynamic does not fold or separate for storage. It is a fixed-footprint machine and requires a permanent floor space of approximately 213 cm × 61 cm. If you’re setting this up in a home gym, measure your space before purchasing. It cannot be stood upright or rolled into a corner.

This is a heavy machine at approximately 52 kg. Two people are strongly recommended for moving and installation. Please factor this into your delivery and setup planning.
